Hiking In Real Wilderness – Călimani Mountains

The Călimani Mountains are the largest volcanic complex of the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania. Maximum height is 2102m, being targeted on the 3rd day of the trip, but you will also see volcanic craters, odd shapes of volcanic rock, beautiful lakes, and walk through several ecosystems, enjoying the 1004 species of vascular plants being present in the area. If you are lucky, you will also see wolves and bears, though not from too close, these animals are wild and can be dangerous.

Escape and get back to Mother Nature in a unique way of experiencing freedom. Leave behind all the stress and noise of everyday work and enjoy rebirth in the nature, in the wilderness of the Călimani Mountains. Being the largest volcanic mountain chain in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains the sight is breathtaking and the hills and peaks will take you to wonderland.

Run free on the path of bears, wolves, foxes, deer or the untamed wild cat, sit at the Table of thieves, which is a huge rock carved by nature itself surrounded by small rocks, which have the role of chairs around this enormous table, which according to the legends, from centuries this was at the meeting point of thieves, where they planned their raids and also where they divided all the treasure they have stolen.

Relax at the crystal clear water of the Iezer Lake, which has ice cold water in the hottest summers, known as the pearl of the mountains or enjoy the view from God’s chair or the Mill of the Devils, where according to the legends more people had a pact with the devil to harm the people living around the mountain, but God punished them turning into rock the mill and the people standing around it.

Write your own fairy tale with the rich and colorful experience you will gain during the one week adventure, an adventure you will never forget.

Day 2

We will leave the comfort of the B&B and head into the mountains. We will only take small backpack with us, with what we need for one day. Our camping equipment, food and larger bags, will be carried by our support vehicle, which we will meet in the afternoon. We will be hiking towards the main ridge of the mountains and after reaching it we will have a great view on the wilderness surrounding us. Late afternoon we will prepare our camping site, build a fire and have a great dinner outdoors.

Day 3-4

Both days we will be hiking on the main ridge of the Călimani Mountains. We will reach the Pietros Peak as well, which is 2102 meters high. This peak is on the side of the once active volcanic crater. There is a possibility to see wild animals, mainly elks and deer. There are bears and wolves as well, but they are elusive animals.

Day 5

After having a rich breakfast, we will be descending from the ridge, and heading towards “civilization”. We will meet up with the car, which will take us back to the Bed & Breakfast, where we have spent our first night. We will spend our afternoon resting.

Day 6

Last full day in Transylvania. Today we will do a little sightseeing, and travel to Sighişoara, where we will visit the Sighişoara Citadel, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful still inhabited citadels in Europe. This is also to be the place where Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) was born. In the evening you will be accommodated in Tîrgu Mureş, in a B&B.

The trip price is 299 pounds/person, which includes: 3 nights’ accommodation in Bed and Breakfasts; camping equipment; 3 meals per day for the entire length of the trip; the services of 2 guides on the mountain, plus 1 guide for the sightseeing day; transport as specified in the program; accident insurance for the length of the trip.

The groups will have a maximum of 8 participants.

Different adventure tours can be arranged, like white water rafting on Jiu River, or canyoning if requested by a group of at least 2 people. This also depends on the weather, since the river can become dangerous after plenty of rainfall or too rocky after drought.
