Root canal treatment
In the case of decay progressing so deep, that it affects the pulp of the tooth, the inflammation of the nerves and blood vessels takes place – if the patient doesn’t seek help from a dentist, the vitality of the tooth might be lost within a short time. The dead or overly inflamed tissues must be removed from the root canal (after proper anaesthesia), the canals must be cleaned, disinfected and filled. This way we hermetically close it from the „outside world” of the mouth and stop any infection spreading inside the root. The root canal treated teeth – if too much tooth structure is missing – will be protected by an overlay or crown, to prevent fracture of the remaining tooth. With the help of our apex-locator we can measure the length of the root canals with great accuracy, this way the filling will not be too short (leaving dead tissue in the canal), nor too long (causing irritation of the surrounding tissues).

Post and cores
If the crown of the tooth broke off because of decay or trauma, but there still is healthy tooth structure lying above the gingiva, it can still be rebuilt with a post, thus restoring again the form of the tooth so it can be covered and protected by a crown. To be able to do this, the remaining root of the tooth must be well implanted, to have a correctly done root canal filling, there shouldn’t be any periapical lesion present, and to have enough tooth structure above the gingiva. Where possible, we use glass fibre posts, because of their tooth-like elasticity, meaning they will not break the root of the tooth, which does tend to happen with metal posts.
